As Australia was a much colder and drier during this time it is thought that Aboriginal people may have used gorges, as they offered access to predictable water and food resources.</p> <p>There are nine recorded Aboriginal art sites in Cania Gorge, but these are not accessible to the public. Photo Credit: Beryl Bleys</em></p></div> <p>The area around Cania Gorge has had a varied history over the past 150 years. Thomas Archer was the first European to explore the headwaters of the Burnett River.</p> <p>Cania Station was established during the 1850s and ran sheep until 1883, when beef and dairy cattle were introduced.</p> <p>Gold was discovered just to the north of Cania Gorge in 1870 and the township known as ‘Cania Goldfields’ soon sprang up along Three Moon Creek. The township’s population fluctuated over time until mining finally ended in the early 1920s. The waters of Lake Cania eventually covered the remains of the goldfields after Cania Dam was built on Three Moon Creek in the early 1980s.  The tops of buildings can still be seen when the dam is low.  Last seen in 2010 before the floods of January 2011.</p> <p>The area in Cania Gorge, east of the picnic ground, became a scenic reserve in 1924, but it was not until 1977 that it was gazetted as a national park. Heading of on an approx 20km drive of unsealed road, high clearance vehicles can take the special drive through the forest to meet up with the conventional vehicles at the top of the range to enjoy morning tea at the old forestry camp area followed by a peek through Bill’s window and passing the present logging area with spectacular views over the forestry and the quaint village of Kalpowar. Return back to the recreation area to enjoy a picnic lunch and those who enjoy a hike can follow on for an enjoyable hike with plenty to see while others can sit back and enjoy the peace of the recreation area. Mount Scoria has picnic table and toilets . The drive is scenic with some nice views and consists of 39km of gravel road with a few rough sections and is suitable for all vehicles. Heading home will be via the highway. Smoko at the Abercorn tennis courts before heading out to explore Wuruma Dam and enjoy our picnic lunch before heading along Old Rawbelle Road to visit the original site of the Rawbelle homestead and see the old grave yard beside the Nogo River. We will then stop at the rest area at Coominglah before heading home via Hurdle Gully with a chance to take in the views from the Coominglah lookout. Patches of dense rainforest with towering hoop pines remain between open eucalypt forests and hoop pine plantations. More than 150 plant species occur in the hoop pine rainforest which was first logged in 1918.</p> <p>The word Kalpowar means either Pine Tree or Copper in Indigenous language. Kalpowar is home to a very unique carnivorous snail. The snail has been named Pedinogyra Kalpowar (or Kalpowar flat-coiled snail) as it was first located and identified in Kalpowar State Forest in 1982.</p> <p>The little village was voted top 50 small towns in Australia in 2016 and voted as Australia’s best kept secret.
