Welcome to the wild & sun-bleached outback community of Monto, which has settled itself along the Three Moon Creek in Central Queensland.
Here, the Monto Museum of Art (MMOA) isn’t just a building—it’s a cultural fortress rising out of the dirt, an art revolution that wraps itself in the rugged landscape and a determination to reclaim old stories. We’re not here to play. No, we’re pushing the limits, living on the edge and breathing life into a place-based art movement that’s as raw and unapologetic as inland Australia.
Inside these walls, we house 3,000 works by the legendary Gil Jamieson, Monto’s own artistic son, whose brushstrokes tell the tale of rural grit, mysticism, and the blood, sweat and years of struggle with the bush itself, framed by farming, dairy cows, pigs and the beef industry. Jamieson’s art doesn’t just hang on the wall—it slices through the air, leaving behind the imprint of toil, upheaval and emotion – a history that is etched in the Australian landscape.
