Erected in 2011 to commemorate the Mulgildie Branch of the Queensland Country Women’s Associations’ 80 years of service and Queensland’s 150 years as a State of Australia. The statue is by local artist Brett Benecke with the assistance and support of Paul Irvine. The backdrop by renowned artist Arthur Hamblin.
The concept for the bunyip statue was a gem of an idea by one of the members of the Mulgildie QCWA and connects with the mystery of The Bunyip Hole which is located approx 13km from the village itself.
This plate steel sculpture depicts the artists interpretation of the many and varied legends of “Bunyip”, carrying what is thought to be the typical lunch of the Mulgildie Bunyip (cattle and lungfish).
This project was support by Arts Queensland and the Regional Arts Development Fund program.
